Tomte, Nisse or 'Tomtenisse' are all Swedish words, which depict an area of influence or place of residence. This mythological creature is thought to be a humanoid figure belonging to the Scandinavian folklore. Tomte was believed to be a caretaker of a farmer's family and children who were at home and kept them secure from the misfortunes, particularly at night. Towards the southernmost Sweden, Nisse is the common term used in Norweigian, Danish and the Scanian dialects. All the other names such as Tuftekall, Tomtegubbe or Haugebonde are connected to the origin of this character.
Appearance
Tomte or Nisse is usually an elderly man, whose size varies from a few inches to about half the height of a normal man. He is bearded and is dressed in casual clothing, like the farmers. It is also believed that he can change shape at will. On the other hand, there are also tales according to which, he has a single, cyclopean eye, four fingers and pointed ears. Tomte
- Despite being small, Tomte had immense strength. Though he was very protective and caring, but was easily offended. He made his own justice which ranged from small pranks to the more perilous punishments such as killing the livestock. Tomte/Nisse was very particular of the routine of the tasks of the farm and did not like things to be altered in any way. In case the workers on the farm urinated in the barns or did not treat the creatures well, the behavior of the Nisse would get worse.
- It was believed that the spirit has to be constantly pleased by the people in the house with gifts. On Christmas night, a bowl full of porridge was served with a pat of butter on top. The Tomte also has to be paid for his work on the farm; the failure to do so leads to mischief, breaking of things, etc.
- Though Tomte was related more to the animals on the farm, he was most attached to the horse. It was also believed that he would braid its hair and tail as well. The undoing of these braids was regarded as a sign of disrespect to the Nisse.
