This argument falls as the underlying theme of the movie.
Story
Harry and Sally meet when she gives him a ride to New York after they both graduate from the University of Chicago. At this time, Harry is dating Sally's friend and soon the film starts revolving around their differing ideas about relationships between men and women. Once, Harry angers Sally by passing a comment that she is attractive and she accuses him of making a pass at her. They part ways. Five years later, they meet at New York airport and this time, both are in a relationship. Sally recently started dating Joe and Harry is engaged to Helen. Harry suggests Sally to become friends, but Sally is firm on her belief that men and women can never be friends. Hence, they separate ways again.
Five years down, they meet again at a New York bookstore. They decide to have coffee together and talk about their previous relationships that have ended now. Finally, friendship blooms between them and they decide on having a friend of the opposite sex. Soon, they can be seen in late-night phone conversations, dinners and spending a lot of time together. It is during the New Year Eve's party that they get attracted to each other, but remain friends. One night, Sally cries tearfully and informs Harry that her ex, Joe, is getting married. On hearing this Harry rushes immediately to Sally home where in the process of comforting her, the two unexpectedly have sex.
This night creates tension and distress in their relationship, which can be seen from the intense argument the two have on their best friends, Jess and Marie's wedding dinner. Their friendship results in a cold war for three weeks. The same year at New Year's Eve party, Sally finds herself lonely and misses Harry. She leaves the party early and finds Harry on the way where he confesses his love for her and they finally make up by having a kiss. And as said, the rest is history. The two are finally happily married.
It is not a case of love at first sight for Harry and Sally. This relationship has taken time to be developed to a stage where they fear that if they sleep with each other, it may ruin their friendship. The movie has some really hilarious scenes and dialogues that put life in it. The two talented actors are absolutely convincing in their roles and portray the characters brilliantly. A normal audience can identify with the movie and its characters. It is an ideal movie to catch with your beloved and spend an evening of lighter moments with each other.
