No New Year party is complete without the traditional food items to munch on while waiting for the midnight hour. Ideally one should have enough stock that fills all your guests and make sure that no one has missed out on anything. Lightweight, easy to digest food is the prime want by everyone. And it goes without saying that drinks are a must for any party to get started. Given below are some easy to cook items and drinks that cater to all age groups and are liked by everyone. Steamed Chinese Fruitcake (a.k.a Sticky Cake)

Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 2 eggs (whites and yolks separated)
  • 1/4-cup butter
  • 1/2-cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups sticky rice flour
  • 1/3-cup milk
  • 1-cup Chinese dried fruits
  • 1 piece crystallized ginger, diced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
How to Make:
  • Set aside a greased loaf pan, which is approximately 4 x 8 inches.
  • The egg whites should be beaten until stiff.
  • The butter and sugar should be mixed together. Then, add the egg yokes and mix thoroughly. Add one-third of the glutinous rice flour and mix nicely.
  • Add at the most half of the milk. Keep adding the rice flour and the milk alternately until the complete amount is mixed in.
  • Stir in those fruits that you are using and then the beaten egg whites should be added, folding them into the cake batter.
  • Pour the prepared cake batter into the greased loaf pan and cover it. Steam for around one hour.
  • Allow it to cool down and then cut into slices.
Lemon Chicken

Ingredients:
  • 2-Tablespoons of Dry Sherry
  • 4 Green (spring) Onions (chopped)
  • 1 piece of Root Ginger (shredded)
  • 500grams (1 pound) Boned Chicken (cut into 1-inch strips)
  • 2 Celery Sticks (Sliced)
  • 125grams of Button Mushrooms (Quartered)
  • 1 Green Pepper (cored, seeded, and sliced)
  • 2-Tablespoons Light Soy Sauce
  • Shredded peel of 2 Lemons
  • A few Lemon slices to garnish
  • 2 Tablespoons Oil for stir-frying
How to Make:
  • Take a bowl and put the sherry, ginger and spring onions in it.
  • Then, add the chicken and toss it well to coat it finely. After that, leave it in the bowl to be marinated for 15 minutes.
  • Next, heat some oil in a frying pan.
  • Add the celery sticks, button mushrooms and the green pepper in the pan.
  • Stir-fry for one minute. Add the sliced chicken and saturate, and then cook it further for 3 minutes.
  • Next, pour some Soy Sauce and put in the lemon peels and cook for one more minute.
  • Finally, stack it in a warm serving dish and garnish generously with lemon slices.
